Optimizing Salesforce Industries Solutions on the Vlocity OmniStudio Platform

This is the title of the new OmniStudio book available on Amazon as of April 19, 2024.

OmniStudio is the engine behind customized, industry-specific offerings that run on the new part of the Salesforce platform called Salesforce Industries. It was originally built by Vlocity who pioneered the concept of the Industry Cloud and was acquired in 2020.

While each industry has its common business processes, Salesforce Industries offers the tools and components that support all types of industries, saving new and existing customers months and even years of development. “Industries have really never been more important”, says Salesforce Co-CEO Bret Taylor, highlighting that these offerings provide customers with quicker time to value.

In 2022, Salesforce called Industries one of its three strategic growth pillars along with the Customer 360 and the company’s geographic expansion. The platform then continued to grow rapidly, and it is currently supporting 15 industries—up from 6 just three years ago at the time of the acquisition of Vlocity.

However, as the out-of-the-box solutions are customized and new apps are developed, clients are often facing performance and scalability issues. Just like with any new technology where the best practices are still being refined, Salesforce Industries apps built with OmniStudio may underperform and some may even crumble under load.

This book provides a fool-proof system built on a set of proven best practices, tools, and specific metrics of improved performance and scalability. It will benefit administrators, developers, hands-on application architects, and business professionals involved with Salesforce Industries solutions.

As an Amazon customer puts it, “The book distills complex concepts into easily understandable content. The hands-on approach, coupled with detailed explanations, made even the more advanced topics clear and approachable. Whether you’re a seasoned Salesforce professional or just starting out, this book is an invaluable resource. It’s like having a knowledgeable mentor guiding you every step of the way.”

Beginning with the 1000-foot view, zooming in on performance and scalability issues of its key components, the book will provide critical insights, helping you deliver better performing and more reliable OmniStudio apps.

While some of these performance-related best practices are available, they are often scattered across different sources. The coherent system presented in this book as well as the never published performance best practice performance assessments and OmniStudio anti-patterns will help you achieve better results faster.

What this book covers

The first half of this book will provide a high-level overview of Vlocity OmniStudio. This will help you drive home the overall vision behind the platform and how the components are designed to work together. This knowledge will also make it easier to diagnose problems and improve performance of your applications.

You will also get insights of how the OmniStudio fits into the overall scheme of things at Salesforce along with the existing low-code tools and what roles do its key components like the Integration Procedures, DataRaptors, FlexCards and OmniScripts play in the Salesforce Industries offering.

If you are new to OmniStudio, you will also find useful a quick hands-on refresher where you will be able to touch a lot of the OmniStudio moving parts, getting ready for the technical chapters ahead.

The book will then introduce the go-to tools that will help you evaluate the performance of your application and its components. You will also find the tools and techniques that will make it easy to see, track and reverse code and configuration changes in your system.

By the end of this part, you will be able to simulate the real-life load scenarios, measure performance and make the adjustments towards better performance of your OmniStudio apps with complete peace of mind.

The second half of the book reviews the best practices, tips, and tricks for achieving better performance at multiple levels. Here you will also find the design patterns and hands-on guidance for boosting performance in Service and Presentation layers of your OmniStudio applications.

You will learn how to measure the improvement you can expect of the common best practices and how to best use them to tune your application components for maximum performance.

Finally, you will learn about the OmniStudio Anti-Patterns – common mistakes that have emerged over time which seemed like a good idea at the time, now causing performance, reliability, and scalability issues in many implementations. With each Anti-Pattern the book introduces several better solutions that will help future-proof your apps, stay within the governor limits and achieve better performance.
